Day 19 - August 16, 2017 - Iron River, WI to Mackinaw City, MI

Day 19 - Wednesday, August 16, 2017 - Iron River, WI to Mackinaw City, MI
Distance: 677km,  Time: 12:30hrs
[Longest day by travel time on the whole trip 12+ hours]
Sunny, Warm 20c to 11c - cool down
Overnight: Lamplighter Motel, 203 E. Janet Street, Mackinaw City, MI (***) Clean, very old fashion and the smallest motel room on the planet - and I mean SMALL.  But friendly staff and bike parked outside my door and were very accommodating during the rain delayed departure in the next morning.  No Breakfast at all, go over two blocks in the main drag in town.  Walking distance.

Knowing that the Lumberman offered no breakfast I got a early start at 6:45 heading for Ashland, WI.  Ashland was at one time a major railroad town with three lines going after the iron ore business, there is a major RR station in town, now not used as a train station but preserved and in very good shape.  It was on the Soo Line RR.

This day will be along haul across the top of the UP (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) over to Mackinaw City.  Mostly passing through towns that made their living off of Iron Ore or the railroads that moved Iron Ore.

Like this 5ft solid rock core from a mine that was drilled from the top down.

One of the roads I found which was good for a afternoon nap - yes there was a nap today.

I missed a turn on US#2 at Weakfield, as I did not have my headset turn-on after breakfast and that cost a few KM's to get back on MI#28, but remember it is always the journey and not the destination, plus I traveled on US#45 which has a story for another day and time.  I also crossed from Central Time into Eastern Time and lost an hour in that process as well.

By 7pm I had reached the North end of the Straits of Mackinaw Bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of the U.S. state of Michigan.

Opened in 1957, the 26,372-foot (4.995 mi; 8.038 km) bridge (familiarly known as "Big Mac" and "Mighty Mac")[4] is the world's 19th-longest main span and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.

The Mackinac Bridge is part of Interstate 75 and the Lakes Michigan and Huron components of the Great Lakes Circle Tours across the straits; it is also a segment of the U.S. North Country National Scenic Trail.

The bridge connects the city of St. Ignace on the north end with the village of Mackinaw City on the south.

After arriving at the motel around 7:45pm, unloading it was time to find a place for dinner.  Just another long day, but no issues.

Tourist Trap Warning - Mackinaw City is on a par with Wall, SD, in fact they could be tied on the competition.  Anyway you have been notified.
