Day 16 - August 13, 2017 - Eastend, SK to Carlyle, SK

Day 16 - Sunday, August 13, 2017 - Eastend, SK to Carlyle, SK
Distance: 538km,  Time: 6:30hrs
Sunny, Warm 27c to 10c
Overnight: Ramada, 110 Tuniff Ave., E., Carlyle, SK  (*****) Almost new, main feature was that the room and a fully functional PC and a great pool, also my room had a door to the outside, made things easy for luggage and monitoring my bike.  Walking distance into town and restaurants.

Today's agenda was very basic:
  • Visit the largest t-Rex fossle at the Royal Saskatchewan Musume site in Eastend
  • Follow the Red Coat Train (Sk Hwy#13) along the southern part of Saskatchewan and check out some railway lines
So not a busy day but a 538km trip which is a bit over my famous 300mile daily limit, but that has been exceed before on this trip.  With the Museum not opening to 10AM, I decided to try out one of the other restaurants for breakfast called Charlies Lunch at 327 Redcoat Drive.  A good choice where the locals go, because one of the features of being "new" to town everyone wants to know your name and where you are from, etc.  Experience this a lot in Manitoba on previous trips West.

What made this a more interesting breakfast was an old farmer who spotted my Police Board Parking Pass on my motorcycle windscreen and being the only unfamiliar person in the cafe, I was easy to spot.

Turns out that Herb Pidt (who was 85) was a retired RCMP Officer and came back to is home in Eastend.  Herb spent most of his policing in Ident (now called CSI) and I too started my police duties with Ottawa in Ident.  Herb had lots of stories to tell, and we could still be talking - but, I did want to get underway sometime that morning.  So of course an 'official' photo had to be taken.  See below, but there is more to the story - remember this is Saskatchewan and there is always more to the story.  The owner of the Riverside Motel tells me that Herb is a celebrity - you see Herb was featured in a National Film Board of Canada called the Grassland Project, must have been his large library of stories.  Anyway I will all be grateful for the welcoming visit I had in Eastend, SK - a very small place with a big heart.

The t-Rex was something to see, as it was unearthed about 30km from Eastend and to date is the largest one found, impressive and a great well run museum, sorry for the short one hour visit, but I had a few KM's to do.

The Red Coat Trail (SK Hwy#13) is named in honour of the RCMP from the late 1800's who patrolled this area, mainly to keep American's out and to establish law and order in the West.  Here is a good link: Red Coat Trail in Saskatchewan

This road has very few towns, so gas planning is essential and this being a Sunday some are closed, but I fuel up where I can.  Did visit some unique towns like Cadillac, Saskatchewan is a village located at the intersection of Highway 13, the Red Coat Trail, and Highway 4 in Southwest SaskatchewanCanada. Located 40 mi/62 km South of Swift Current, Cadillac has a population of around 100 people. The three largest buildings remaining in the community are the easily recognizable former Cadillac School, the Cadillac Skating and Curling Rink, and the former Saskatchewan Wheat PoolGrain elevator.

In the town of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, there is a short line Railway operating the former branch line of the CP, called Great Western Ry. Link: Great Western Ry, being a Sunday nothing was running, but they had some interesting road power.

Next stop was Weyburn and onto Carlyle for the night, getting in around 6:30pm, a long day with lots to see.
